BSWA BAMBI Nature Meditations
Explore some of the natural and peaceful beauty in the Busselton Augusta Margaret River Buddhist Initiative (BAMBI) region in the South-West of Western Australia (WA) with us. The BSWA monastics have been invited to come, stay for a while, practise and engage with the growing local community interested in meditation and in a peaceful and kind way of living their lives.
Many thanks to the kind-hearted supporters who make these visits possible: organising and providing transport, meals and sharing their private properties and homes with us.

23) Gratitude & paying it forward
Просмотров 3059 месяцев назад
How can we best express our gratitude to our teachers? Thanking someone who has helped you is good. However, don't just leave it there, pay it forward and help someone else. That way the goodness continues and does not stop. (This short video clips was extracted from the Q&A sessions of the 9-day meditation retreat at Jhana Grove in July 2023 led by Ajahn Brahm. If you would like to view the en...
22) Sharing your meditation experiences
Просмотров 4149 месяцев назад
Are we allowed to share our meditation experiences with our family and friends? If it is a good, deep meditation, then only share it with someone who can understand it and who you can trust: your teacher, a good fellow meditator or your partner or spouse. If people do not understand they might become jealous or it could unfortunately create negativity and ill-will. (This short video clips was e...
21) Splotchy, stained nimittas
Просмотров 5059 месяцев назад
What to do with a stained nimitta? You all deserve jhanas and you all can experience them. Even if your virtue is not perfect and you have a stained nimitta, there is still a way to work with that. Just focus and zoom in on the clean, beautiful and perfect part. Please keep your precepts as best as you can though and resolve to improve, when you brake them. (This short video clips was extracted...
20) Complex & simple nimittas
Просмотров 3209 месяцев назад
What are complex and simple nimittas and how to use them skilfully? Complex nimittas have all sorts of shapes, details or colours. They may even appear as whole landscapes and be moving and transforming. With more meditation, peace and patience complex nimittas simplify naturally. They start appearing as one single colour and they have a simple shape too. Simple nimittas also stay still and don...
19) Difference between feeling & knowing the breath
Просмотров 5169 месяцев назад
What is the difference between feeling and knowing the breath? When you start to be aware of your breathing in the present moment you will lose track of where you exactly are. The perceptions of inbreath and outbreath, beginning, middle and end disappear. It is just breath happening, that's all. This is natural because you are starting to simplify your perception of the breathing, which in turn...
18) Where to watch the breath
Просмотров 4979 месяцев назад
Where do I watch my breath? Wherever it happens to be. Ajahn Brahm has a blocked nose, so he cannot watch his breath at the tip of the nose. Just be aware if your breath is going in or out and ask yourself how you know. Then gently focus on the area where you can actually feel your breathing, that is so much easier. (This short video clips was extracted from the Q&A sessions of the 9-day medita...
17) Calming & stilling the mind
Просмотров 5049 месяцев назад
How can you calm and still the mind? Stillness - no movement - is the natural state of the human mind. If it is not moved by the winds of wanting, it will move less and less and less, until it becomes perfectly still. All by itself though, by letting go and stopping, not through doing (forcing and controlling). You don't hold your mind still, you let it be still.
16) Lessen thinking during meditation
Просмотров 4069 месяцев назад
How to lessen thinking during a body scan meditation? Make the body scan easy and enjoyable. Recognise the peacefulness and the relaxation and enjoy it. Also know that it will improve your health. Then the benefits will take away the importance of the thinking. If you enjoy something, you don't think. (This short video clips was extracted from the Q&A sessions of the 9-day meditation retreat at...
15) Cause for increasing mindfulness
Просмотров 36710 месяцев назад
What is the cause for mindfulness to increase? When the five hindrances get weaker then stillness, mindfulness and wisdom increase. Wanting and ill-will destroy mindfulness. Mindfulness supported by virtue and sense restraint empowers the meditation to be more peaceful and powerful. In Ajahn Brahm's words: it is fun to have strong mindfulness! (This short video clips was extracted from the Q&A ...
14) Bringing joy into meditation
Просмотров 30210 месяцев назад
How to bring joy into meditation and at what stage? Right from the beginning, by looking forward to meditation and then by encouraging and developing the delight and pleasure of a relaxed body in the beginning stages of meditation. Then you will realise that the joy actually lives in your mind and gets generated by the way it looks at your body. Once cultivated that joy will also arise when you...
13) Trusting your body posture
Просмотров 25510 месяцев назад
What to do when the body slouches in meditation? Don't interfere or try to over come it. Trust your body and your back. Allow it to do what it needs to do. It will stay slouched for a while, but then it will straighten up all by itself. Our body knows better what posture it needs then we do. (This short video clips was extracted from the Q&A sessions of the 9-day meditation retreat at Jhana Gro...
12) Overcoming pain and unpleasant mind-states
Просмотров 73610 месяцев назад
How do you deal with pain, restlessness and fear in meditation? Ajahn Brahm introduces and explains the "emperor's three questions meditation". When is the most important time? - Now Who is the most important person? - The one right in front of you (The thing you are aware of in meditation - whatever it is) What is the most important thing to do? - To care (not to cure, improve or change) When ...
11) Bad, vivid dreams & metta at night
Просмотров 46010 месяцев назад
Why do I have very vivid bad dreams when I meditate? Usually the vivid bad dreams will vanish and disappear after a while. To speed this up a bit you can determine "May I have a peaceful sleep" three times or do some loving kindness meditation before going to sleep. (This short video clips was extracted from the Q&A sessions of the 9-day meditation retreat at Jhana Grove in July 2023 led by Aja...
10) Complete forgiveness, amnesty & healing
Просмотров 29010 месяцев назад
How can you forgive completely? It takes a lot of reflection, but the realisation, that the anger and hate keep hurting us, might help. We actually have the choice to forgive and not to hold on to memories of the terrible things which have happened in the past. This is the process of moving from being a victim to being a victor. Ajahn Brahm shares a touching, but quite raw story of violence, tr...

I am an old man, next year I shall be 89. Although I am watching a ten-year-old video on RUclips I am hoping you can help me understand a Vipassana meditation issue. During the early nineties, I studied Buddhist philosophy while in a Thai forest temple. It was called Wat Pah Santikavas near the town of Chiawan in Eastern Thailand. During my two years there I lived as a lay level monk and spent time practising meditation. I concentrated on my breathing and the sense of touch in my nostrils. Occasionally, and usually, as a surprise I experienced effects such as seeing a fellow monk's mental state by the colours on his face, on other occasions I experienced Nimata such as a rabbit that greeted me during my walking exercise. The Loung Poo (head monk) told me that if there had been rabbits the snakes would have eaten them all. He also said I was seeing these strange effects because my mind was becoming calm. my experiences happened twenty years ago in 1995. This morning after about an hour of (03.30 03/07/24) following my breath I began to feel as if my face, especially around my eyes was being touched by flies or flying insects. There was no noise but at one point it felt that my nose was being completely invaded by these insects and I broke my concentration to wipe my nose, I was alarmed by the sensation and I recalled that I felt no other sensation of breathing or sitting during the experience. I remembered my early teaching to passively observe any physical effects arising, just to let them go. I would appreciate reassurance that I am proceeding correctly.🙏

My one question id love to pose to Ajahn Brahm would be: can there be subconscious chatter and stillness at the same time? My experience says yes, because its not conscious, just there, and after some time of just letting it be, it sort of fades into a... silent hum, of sorts. But i think im taking "stillness" too literally

Beautifully said, but the initial question was not answered well. He just brought in a phenomenon, that may sometimes be linked to knowing the breath. It's like if I were to ask, "what's the difference between walking and running?" and someone answered "Running is often more fun.". That may be true, but doesn't characterise running or walking in a helpful way.

In the Nikayas (which are a large bookcase full of books; even the Vinaya is several large books in size, when printed), when Lord Buddha was teaching dependent origination, Ven Ananda complained about its complexity and asked if it was actually very simple and if he was missing the point. Lord Buddha replied that, no, it is actually very complex, which is why beings get trapped in samsara. Lord Buddha taught many intertwined lists and 'wheels'/matrices, which can be confusing. He also loved to use metaphors, which are experience-oriented and philosophically imprecise. Those lists floated around in the oral tradition of ancient India, for a few hundred years, until philosophers tried to reconcile them into a system of philosophy, which is the Abhidhamma Pitaka. My opinion is that Lord Buddha was a prince, not a philosopher. He did his best to intellectually break down a complex subject into lists, but, ultimately, he was teaching 'warrior knowledge' (ie, a skill or experience one must develop), so it's not right to get too preoccupied with philosophising about his many lists. Hope this helps

Buddhist Teachers continue to be ignorant of the Indian Kundalini traditions. And Tibetan Tantric traditions. And I’m sorry but whether it is ignorance, lack of personal experience, caution, or denial - it all serves to make them and Theravadins come across as missing a piece of the puzzle. I’m not saying it’s necessarily a critical piece - although these energetic traditions will disagree - but the teachings/teachers are not delivering the complete teachings imo.
